In Defense Of Reciprocal Linking

There seems to be a lot of bad-mouthing about reciprocal linking nowadays by SEO “gurus” and amateurs alike, most notably in the various internet forums.
Reciprocal links, according to the naysayers, are virtually worthless because they supposedly do not help your search rankings or pass Google PageRanks to your site.

While no one really knows how search engines factor reciprocal links into search ranking calculations, let’s suppose that the naysayers are right– that is, reciprocal links provide no SEO benefits whatsoever. Should we then abandon the practice of reciprocal linking altogether?

Not a chance!

Reciprocal linking is a perfectly natural and legitimate traffic-building technique that predates the search engines themselves. To abandon the practice simply to satisfy certain fears or assumptions about how a search engine works is unnatural and potentially unethical. That search engines cannot handle reciprocal links properly reveals a shortcoming in their algorithms, not in the practice of reciprocal linking itself.

From my years of internet marketing experience, reciprocal links are an invaluable source of highly targeted direct traffic. Some of my sites are receiving hundreds of visitors a month through my link partners. Best of all, the traffic is all free. While I could have bought these clicks through various pay-per-click campaigns, which I do heavily anyway, I save hundreds of dollars a month just by trading links with relevant sites.

The keyword here is relevant. You’ll get clicks to your site only if your link is displayed prominently on your partners’ sites and that they are related to yours in some way. By the same token, you must be prepared to trade links with your partners in good faith, which includes devoting premium space to your link partners and limiting the number of outbound links on your site.

Here are some important points to keep in mind when swapping links with another site:

* Is the site in question relevant to yours in some way? Traffic is one thing, but high-quality, targeted traffic traffic is another. While you can get clicks by swapping links with an unrelated site, you can get more relevant traffic at higher click-through rates from sites are related to yours.

* Is the site complementary to yours, or is it a direct competitor? It’s not always true that linking to a direct competitor will be detrimental to your business. No two sites are exactly identical. There must be something different that the other site offers that yours doesn’t. Ask yourself whether or not the benefits from exchanging links with a competitor will outweigh the potential harms.

* Get an idea of your potential link partner’s traffic before trading links with them. Ideally, you’d want to trade links with sites that have comparable or higher traffic than yours. Don’t trade links with low-traffic sites as you could gain more by exchanging links with high-traffic ones. One exception to this rule is if the site under consideration is new and looks promising, in which case, the immediate liability in linking to the site is outweighed by the potential future benefits.

You could look at various analytical parameters, such as PageRank, Alexa ranking, link popularity, search ranking, to gauge a potential linking partner’s traffic. But none of these measurements are definitive, so there is an art to deciding whether or not a site is worth swapping links with.

* Where will your link appear on your partner’s site? Will your link appear in a highly visible spot or in the footer? Footer links will not get you many direct clicks and may not even help you in the search engine rankings.

* How many outbound links does your potential linking partner have? The fewer the number of competing links, the greater the chance that your link will be clicked on.

* Will your link be placed on only a single page or site-wide on your partner’s site? Site-wide links provide the greatest exposure as visitors may exit from any page on your partner’s site to your site. If your link partner does not do site-wides for any reason, make sure they link to your site from a prominent place on their home page. Links from “Links” or “Resources” pages will not get you much traffic.

The worst possible way to trade links with another site is to have your link appear on a dangling “Links” page to which a visitor cannot reach from the site’s home page. Reciprocal links set up in this way is usually done in bad faith and serve no other purpose than to manipulate the search engines and/or cheat linking partners.

* Make sure that your anchor text (link title) is descriptive and keyword-rich. Descriptive, keyword-rich link titles not only will not only get more people to click on your site, but also will help more in the search engine rankings– to the extent that reciprocal links provide any SEO benefits at all. But we’re not concerned about search engines, are we? Bear in mind that your main focus is the people who visit your partner’s site, not the search engine bots.

* When in doubt, use the “no follow” tag. If there is any concern whatsoever, by you or your linking partner, about the potential adverse effects of reciprocal linking on search engine rankings, use the “no follow” tag to link to each other.

Site-wide links are often frowned upon because they are thought be penalized by search engines. While this may or may not be true, using the “no follow” tag will circumvent the fear altogether. A “no follow” attribute tells a search engine not to follow the link or factor it into the destination page’s link popularity, thereby stripping any SEO benefits from the link. To the extent that the link exchange is done in good faith to swap traffic rather than link popularity, the use of the “no follow” tag should not be a concern.

* Keep an eye out on your link partners. While you should be very selective who to swap links with, so that they don’t try to cheat down the line, it’s good practice to check on your partners’ sites from time to time. While there are software programs to help you check whether or not your partners are still linking to you, you shouldn’t have swapped links with too many sites in the first place to have to rely on these automated systems. You should be able to check manually by clicking on your partners’ links one by one and verifying that they are still linking to you under the terms initially agreed upon.

* Make sure that you are linked to relevant sites meaning you both have the same subject matter and at the same time all the links are also related to each other.

* It’s more about quality than quantity. In reciprocal link building, be on the look out for quality sites, linking to more and more sites not really related to your site is not advisable.

* This is a long and sometimes frustrating process because you still have to check if the sites have agreed on link exchange and regularly track down if the link to your site is still present on the other’s website.

* Some webmasters may turn down your link and replace it with another link. If that’s the case, take their link off your site also as this can give them good search engine rankings as one way linking and your website may lose.

*Keep the number of links on that page at a minimum amount, if the page has 40 or more links then don’t waste your time there anymore.

* You can decide however if you want to have a separate link page, this will depend on the size of the site and what your topic is all about.

Be extra careful in the reciprocal link building process, make sure that all the links are relevant and all the links contained in the other website website are also related. Bear in mind also that not all webmasters are willing to exchange links, some webmasters do not allow link exchange or if they allow it, double check if your link exists on their link pages. Sometimes, webmasters do a naughty trick of hiding links after they’ve agreed on a link exchange.

Follow the link exchange rules. The site that you are exchanging links with should exist in major search engines and has good traffic ranking (Alexa is an effective site to keep track on rankings and traffic). Check regularly, let’s say every month if your link is still in the site, some webmasters also have this practice of removing other links in their sites.

Optimization Tip #2: How does Tagging really work, and why does it matter?

In our example, when we open the Canon landing page you need to start with the page title for your web site. The page title should only include the main keywords. (Do not ever say welcome to our web site!) Try to combine the keywords in your title. Make sure you use the H1 header tag early in your body text. Also, when Google reads the web page it uses the text from the top left-hand side of the page to the bottom right hand side of the page.

Next, you would need to create H2 header tags. You can think of that as the sub heading for a web page. This is a very common used tag, so it’s best to place the primary keyword in your H1 tags and your secondary keywords into your H2 tags.

Now you need to actually create the content for the page. When you try to write the contents, sprinkle your main keywords throughout the copy. But don’t overdo it, just make it a natural effort. Once you have written the copy you should then go back and bold underline or italicize some of the keywords. Only one time each, maximum. There are many HTML site building tools out there that use the Bold (B) tag for bolding keywords, and has been overused. Google doesn’t penalize you for it, but in fact, by using the tag STRONG it provides higher quality content for search engines. You can also add some images for your users, and when you do this you need to properly include the keyworded image tags. So for example, if we have an image on our web page called ‘oneshot.jpg’ you would include code that adds that ALT tag and text about that specific memory stick (from our Sony example).

Also, Google views your web page from top left to bottom right. Well, in general they do. However, you want to make sure that you code your HTML to compliment or support this, specially if you have non-related navigational elements to the left of page. Optimization Tip #3: Off page search engine optimization – competition to the ground!

You have come up with your niche marketplace and associated keywords and phrases into your page. You will have completed proper approach to tagging from titles through the body content, including H1′s, H2′s and ALT tags. You are then ready to get your site indexed. Your first rule, is to never use the Google submission form. There are better and faster ways.

The first approach

You need to know how a search engine finds you in the first place. They will visit one web site that is already in their index and if they follow the link to that new site, it could be yours. For example, if you have a new site and you have a partner in this ‘Canon’ business space, and he puts a link to your page and he’s already visible on the Internet at Google, they’ll crawl to that site and find your link and get you into the index. Now what if you don’t have a partner in this space in your are brand new, you still can get into the index. There are article directories that you can submit to, places like PRWeb.com. Others are – goarticles.com, buzz article.com, article fever.com and many more. These are excellent sites for you to write something about your services or products. The engines will pick you out, and Google will find you.

The second approach (and to quickly get listed in the Google index)

Go see your competition. Type in the search terms you are competing with and find web sites that have a page rank of five or six or higher that you will notice in the green bar from the Google toolbar (above). Find six or 10 of these sites and locate their contact information. We have found that e-mail works – of course – but picking up the phone and commenting on their site and how discussing how a link partnership could benefit each others, rates higher. Top ranking sites may ignore you, and it’s certainly tougher persuade somebody to add your link to their web sites. You must give them a good reason to do this. Contact sites that are related to you and are complimentary – those are the best. Find good and great link neighborhoods within your topics. And always think of a way that you can give them something that they would benefit from. Think of this as an emotional bank account. You make deposits, and you (later) may make withdrawals. If you can manage to get at least one PR 6 web site to link your web site, you’ll be off and running. You should be indexed in under three days. If you get a PR 7 web site link to you – in most cases you’ll be there in 24 hours.

The third approach (and why you must be careful here)

Purchase links from high Page Rank websites. The easiest and fastest way to do this is to visit one of the many link purchasing websites. Here are a few of the better ones: a) http://www.linkadage.com, b) c) http://www.textlinkbrokers.com, d) http://www.text-link-ads.com. (NOTE: Only buy one/month, or you may get seriously penalized). Many times you can purchase 1 PR7 link for a 1 month time period for, say, $150. After the month is up, there is no need to renew because you are already in Google’s index. Paying $150, and you can be indexed by Google quickly and with little to no work on your part.

Tip #1:

Add a Google sitemap (XML). You can easily do this with free tools or directly via a Google account. You should also check the competitor sites for [http://URLname/sitemap.xml]. It’s the default for Google, and if the competition has it (it will load in your browser or reader) – you can be assured they are pretty agressive and informed about Search Engine Optimization techniques.

Tip #2:

Discover how many pages the competition has online. You can use free tools again, and the Xenu’s Link Sleuth is free – and fast – a good tool to keep close. The ‘Stats for Managers’ at the bottom of page is the important data for statistics.

Tip #3:

Use the ‘link: sitename.com’ syntax in Google to locate number of backlinks within a competitor site. Google and Yahoo have different estimates here, but it’s vital information from both. (Yahoo use ‘linkdomain: sitename.com’).

Much is written on the blogs’ approach to SEO rankings. We believe it has its place, but in moderation and always pertinent to your business. Blog spamming can get you penalized as well.
