Despite the fact that other competitors had fewer options, they used more words “Chess” in its semantic core than we are. On my site, the emphasis was given to two or 3 worded text in the core, for example, “chess online”. In principle, it is logical to promote 3 worded link, than with the high-anchor. And then I came to understand : the problem is not with the links, the problem was with Google.

With its updates, Google has distorted the effect of two or 3 worded queries. As I understand it, the algorithm has changed the effect of ranking for one word in the phrase matching the query. To explain more clearly : now two or three worded inquiries were ranked as one word. Certainly, you can say that there are many other influential factors, and one can not say that 3 worded inquiry has become so popular. And it as well may be true. But I have another theory: in the upper figure, the query “chess online” and “online chess” are having relatively similar rankings. When I checked the backlinks, I figured out that the query “online chess” has almost no options, at a time when some sites were linked to us using the anchor “chess online”. So, the query “online chess” had lost their positions, and “chess online” remained stable.

Theory # 3- Google renders more weight to the word order in a phrase than it was before. Namely, the 3 worded inquiry is indexed as one word. The story began once of a sudden when our website started quickly losing its positions on one of the important key queries. Ranking of other queries that contained similar words, were kept in the normal position.

As I could see, the most common key query ‘chess’ began to rapidly lose its position (as was once in a while when I was on vacation) on its stand # 6 positions to # 12, and then as far down as # 20. The two word requests “chess game” and “online chess” began to follow on the bad example of ‘chess’, though not as dramatically. What is it? Why? How can this happen? All these issues have popped up in my head. Of course, the first idea- the site had been trapped under one of the search engine filters. I could not help but notice that the query “Play Chess online” remained fully in its original place, without any movements. And so this point had really interested me, and I was determined to find out why and how it can be.

I then investigated on the back links, especially those that have the word “chess” in anchor link or alt text. As it turned out, back links were not so many, and those that we found had been there for quite some time and still have its value for optimization. Pages and back-links wouldn’t show anything unexpected. This suggests that there is no reason that can explain such a dramatic and rapid loss of positions.

The next step was an examination of competitors’ sites, which had taken the best positions: I have not done a detailed, deep analysis, but simply looked for the most significant changes in the reference weight. I drew my attention for two international sites, that used a query ‘chess’ in their domain, for example chess.dk or chess.ch. As always, I have used the German google.de to see a regional problem, and realized that sites in Denmark and Switzerland may also be relevant to the geo independent search.

Theory # 1. National sites fall into an international problem. In principle, it is logical, and not a matter to be anxious, because search engines tend to show pages that will be relevant to the user (for example, if the user writes the request letters in German, it will not fall in a straight line onto the English-language resource). If you follow my request to put ‘chess’ in search request, you would understand why the rankings has changed, but why so rapidly? The position could fall into two points, but I wouldn’t expect them falling down to #20. Then I started to analyze the “new” page (just the competitors pages) and the structure of their backlinks…
