July 29th, 2010

Generating traffic becomes an automated aspect of your internet marketing when you learn how to harness the power of the search engines. A major aspect of generating no cost website traffic is choosing the right keywords to use for your website content and sales copy, and using those keywords and phrases so that the search engines know to send you people searching for those terms.

Keywords and key-phrases (generally 2-5 words) play a HUGE part in just about every single form of online marketing and advertising. In this instance, we are using keywords on our web pages so that the search engines know to send targeted web site visitors to YOUR web site.

A common sense approach will get you started down the road to niche domination. Start by brainstorming the possible words and phrases that your ideal audience use to seek out information. The whole idea is to choose RELEVANT keywords so that the traffic you attract is the targeted web visitors you need to thrive.

Although, with so much competition for listings at the search engines, the most common terms may not be the most profitable. Sure, they get a lot of action, but what are your chances of winning for these highly competitive searches? It is much more effective to seek out keywords that reach your target audience, that are not overly competitive (other websites/blogs using the keyword), yet still have enough demand (people searching that term) to be worthwhile.

Finding keywords is a start for reaching you target website audience, but using them right is also crucial. Follow these guidelines so that the search engines know what your pages are about without thinking its being tricked…

Number One-Use once in the Meta Title, the Meta Description, and page File Name.
Number Two-Use once in a page headline.
Number Three-Use in content at about 2%, which means twice for every 100 words.
Number Four-Use within the first 500 characters of content after the headline.
Number Five-Use in a link somewhere on the page.

Avoid making any crucial mistakes when placing keywords and phrases in your website content. The search engines no spam and tricks and they punish those who use them. Play by the rules and attempt to make your web site search engine friendly, pleasing them so they send you traffic.

Make Sure You Don’t Trust In These Kinds Of Seo Common Myths

July 27th, 2010

Search Engine Optimization
Search engine optimization or SEO is riddled with many different myths showing up from time to time. The myths are created when search engines change, requiring new ways to best utilize their service. A lack of set rules on how to rank adds to the confusion. It is your job to keep updated on any changes made by a search engine to maximize your rank. You can only this by testing out various strategies and see what works.

Search engine optimization has been in use for a pretty long time. The reason it got so popular is because the Internet is growing with warp speed, which means the search engines are also advancing. The science of ranking in the search engines, or SEO, has progressed a lot over the few years. When something grows to this proportion, there is a lot of false information that appears which you need to know about. While they appear to be real and can be quite frightening, many of the SEO myths you hear are nothing more than stories. Some of these stories will be proven wrong in this article.

Optimizing long tail keywords is essential if you want to rank highly for them. You can find this myth in many Internet marketing circles. In fact, because so few people are searching for long tail keywords in the search engines, there is little competition for them, so optimizing them is not necessary. Ranking highly for long tail keywords is not difficult. All you have to do to rank for them is use them naturally somewhere in your content. There’s nothing else you need to do. Long tail keywords are worth targeting because you don’t have to spend time on optimization for them.

The fact that PPC ads will have an impact on how your site ranks in the SERPs is one common yet strange SEO myth. This fact is quite untrue. A lot of people believe that they can affect the ranking of their site in the SERPs by running PPC ads. What you need to keep in mind is that PPC and SERP rankings have no influence on each other. This is why it is a mistake to spend money on PPC based on the assumption that your site will rank better. You should, instead, be concentrating on building more backlinks, if you want to increase the rank of your site, as well as adding quality content. The best way to judge this myth is by using your common sense.

The next SEO myth to be aware of is that each page should only focus on optimizing one keyword. While there is no merit to this notion of only targeting one phrase on each page, still many website owners and writers of articles on SEO continue to repeat it. The basic premise behind this belief is that your page will rank better if it’s very focused. The first reason why this doesn’t make any real sense is that it’s not easy to write a page about just one keyword phrase with a natural flow. You are also not using your space efficiently if you only use one keyword per page when you could be using more. What do you gain by limiting yourself to one keyword on a page when you could put a number of keywords in the same space? The more keyword phrases you have on your optimized page, the better it is. If your goal is to get targeted visitors, this is the way to do it. Your traffic seldom comes from just one keyword, but usually from several, as you can verify by doing web analytics. It’s completely okay to optimize for more than one phrase and is critical for your search engine success.

Another mistaken idea that many people have is that search engine optimization involves fooling the search engines so that they rank you highly. You may be able to mislead the search engines, but then you are also misleading the people you are targeting for your website. If you get traffic using these methods, how well do you think it will convert? If you want to use true SEO, you have to focus on putting relevant content on your site and building quality backlinks, which the search engines will reward you for.

Another other myth that is quite common and you should be aware of when you are optimizing your site is that your site will be banned if you don’t conform to Google’s rules and regulations. This is due to the fact that most of Google’s webmaster rules are a matter of good judgment. It’s not compulsory for you to study them if you are certain you are in the right. Just make sure you’re not doing anything the search engines would think is direct spamming/cheating. If you want to learn more then you should make sure to read these regulations at least once because they are always changing and improving.

Our next SEO myth is the idea that you can’t use tables inside HTML code. This is another false idea. In truth, search engine spiders have never had any difficulty finding HTML tables. Search engines can see and recognize table code without any difficulty. Still, the idea that you can rank better with designs without tables persists among web developers, even though it isn’t true.

Another myth is the fact that your site needs to be updated all the time, even though some think it has an effect on your SERP rankings. While adding new content and updating your website regularly will not affect your search engine rankings, at the same time it will lead to spiders crawling your site more often. So, don’t make changes that aren’t needed simply for the search engines. The effect will be so insignificant, it simply isn’t worth it. Simply visit some of the highest ranking sites in niches that are pretty popular and you will find they haven’t had fresh content added in quite a while. It’s a good idea to do as much research as you can, so you don’t believe in this kind of myth. Believing in myths can cost you time as well as money, so be careful about what sources of information you consult. If you verify your facts before taking action on them, you can save yourself time and frustration.

Even though these stories are quite widespread you shouldn’t let them interfere with your SEO efforts. It is vital that you are aware of the facts when you first begin marketing your sites with the search engines so that you don’t find yourself wasting time by focusing your efforts in the wrong direction.

By going to your website in your browser and removing the www. portion from the beginning of your web address, and then hitting enter, you can check if your website has a redirect in place, if your server is correctly configured, when you hit return, the www. portion should come back, check this on a few pages and not just your home page, if the www. portion fails to come back on any of your pages and the SEO company does not pick up on this, its time to move on. Note, if your website uses the url without the www. at the beginning as default, then the converse should be true and when you add www. and hit enter, it should revert back to the non www version of your url.

Do They Carry Out Checks To Reveal Canonical Urls ?
Canonical urls, or canonicalization is just a fancy SEO term that means the same content (or very similar content) is accessible on more than one page. This can be a very grave issue which can effect the overall ability of your website to rank well in google and the other top search engines. There are a few ways that canonicalization can come about, such as when a website has different pages containing the same products for different currencies, but the only part of the content that varies between the two page variations is the actual prices. Another cause can be poorly coded websites. Ask the company you are approaching for a quote if their services include checking for canonical urls as standard.

Will they Check Your Site For Duplicate Content?
Duplicate content is another big rankings killer that negatively impacts the ability of affected pages to rank well, whilst at the same time having a unfavorable effect on the overall trust of your entire website. Make sure that the prospective SEO Services provider is aware of the severity that duplicate content has on a website, and that they have measures in place to check for it at the outset of any and all campaigns.

Applying The Practice Of Long Tail Keywords While Blogging

July 22nd, 2010

Although blogging is often looked at as a simple task, there are several issues that arise and steps any blogger must follow in order to compose a blog that Internet surfers actually would have interest in. With so many little issues to manage, many bloggers become overwhelmed, and when they look at the results for all their time spent, the are left dissatisfied. The traffic just doesn’t show.

So that is why we are going to talk about the practice of using long tail keywords in order to show better with the search engines. And while this practice is basically the same as research for Keywords and Phrases, properly placed long tail keywords can open up new traffic doors, as long as the competition is low. Of course this means the amount of traffic from those long tail keywords will be less, it is still better than no traffic at all.

But before we discuse long tail keywords in detail, I think it is key to make sure we are all on the same page regarding keywords. So what are keywords exactly?

Keywords are words that Google picks up on to determine search engine results. What this means is, Google and all other search engines have tools called spiders, spiders crawl websites and blogs and anything else they can find on the web. They use the sites URL, Description, Titles, and Content to determine how to classify a specific website.

And what this means to a beginner blogger is, that if your blog is not focused or cannot be classified by search engines, the search engines will not know what to do with it. It may appear in random searches that has little or nothing to do with what the actual blog is about. This will result in very poor traffic. And this is something we as bloggers usually want to avoid. As a blogger, we have the unique ability to create keyword rich articles that search engines can easily spot.

And with that being said, we can now talk about long tail keywords. Single or two word keywords and phrases like Money, or Loans or Football are killers. Try searching those types of keywords in Google and you will get some real strong websites. Chances of a little old blog to show up for keywords like that are almost non-existent, but never fear, this is where long tail keywords work for our blogs.

Let’s looks at a simple example. Say you want your blog to be about Vacation Destinations. If you search Google for that Keyword phrase, what do you see?

You see some strong websites. Some really established websites that have been around, that carry a high PR and have great popularity. Here are the Top 5 results

Vacationidea.com
Expedia.com
Luxuryresorts.com
Travelwiththekids.about.com
And
Cheapflights.com

These are all PR 4 and 5 websites. And something that as bloggers we would like to stay away from. But, that does not mean we do not want to include this primary keyword phrase within our blog title or post titles, or randomly placed within our blogs.

But what it does mean is that at this time it is not focused enough for you as a blogger to be competitive. But what can you do? You can dig deeper

“Michigan Vacation Destinations”

Let’s see what we end up with.

Michigan-vacation-destination.com
Michigan-vacation-destination.com/
Michigan.org
Detroit.about.com
Tripadvisor.com

These are a little more reasonable, with michigan.org being the only PR over 5 the others are PR2 & PR3

But we can still go deeper.

“Northern Michigan Vacation spots”

You see here, I added northern and I changed destination to spot. I did this because it was auto generated by Google, meaning it is viewed as a viable keyword.

Here is where you want to be
When you look at the results, all the sites are PR3 or lower and there is only about 112,000 results from the search.

Google’s keyword tool only says that this long tail keyword is searched 46 times per month. But if you break it down like this, your odds are better. Especially with search engines that will auto fill the search box as you go along

Northern Michigan is searched over 200,000 times a month
Northern Michigan Vacation is searched 3,600 times
And your long tail keyword is searched 46

This gives you a pretty ranging audience, and even though your competition in the beginning will only be with the full longtail keyword, with time and blog maturity and heaps of backlinks, you can start to compete with the higher searched keywords.

This is why long tail keywords can be so critical if you have any expectations of ever being popular. This does not mean that as soon as you add a certain set of words you will be indexed for them, not at all, it is a process, you need keyword density and you will need lots of content before Google will even consider your blog as relevant.

But start with small fish, and build. A little traffic will always be better than no traffic. Especially in the beginning.
